چکیده

This paper describes the validation of a dispersion-corrected density functional theory (d-DFT) method for the purpose of assessing the correctness of experimental organic crystal structures and enhancing the information content of purely experimental data. 241 experimental organic crystal structures from the August 2008 issue of Acta Cryst. Section E were energy-minimized in full, including unit-cell parameters. The differences between the experimental and the minimized crystal structures were subjected to statistical analysis. The r.m.s. Cartesian displacement excluding H atoms upon energy minimization with flexible unit-cell parameters is selected as a pertinent indicator of the correctness of a crystal structure. All 241 experimental crystal structures are reproduced very well: the average r.m.s. Cartesian displacement for the 241 crystal structures, including 16 disordered structures, is only 0.095 Å (0.084 Å for the 225 ordered structures). R.m.s. Cartesian displacements above 0.25 A either indicate incorrect experimental crystal structures or reveal interesting structural features such as exceptionally large temperature effects, incorrectly modelled disorder or symmetry breaking H atoms. After validation, the method is applied to nine examples that are known to be ambiguous or subtly incorrect.

Assessment of a variety of dispersion-corrected density functional theory calculations used in molecular crystal structure prediction

For a long time, the prediction of molecular crystal structures from first principles has been one of the most challenging computational problems. Because of the large number of degrees of freedom, methods with low computational effort have to be used. The price for this efficiency is, however, a loss of accuracy. In recent years, important progress has been made in the development of dispersio...

Theoretical investigations on molecular structure, NBO, HOMO-LUMO and MEP analysis of two crystal structures of N-(2-benzoyl-phenyl) oxalyl: A DFT study

The N-(2-benzoyl-phenyl) oxalyl derivatives are important models for studying of three-centered intramolecular hydrogen bonding in organic molecules. The quantum theoretical calculations for two crystal structures of N-(2-benzoyl-phenyl) oxalyl (compounds I and II) were performed by Density Functional Theory (B3LYP method and 6-311+G* basis set). From the optimized structures, geometric paramet...

Adsorption Behaviors of Curcumin on N-doped TiO2 Anatase Nanoparticles: Density Functional Theory Calculations

The density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to get information concerning the interaction of curcumin with pristine and N-doped TiO2 anatase nanoparticles. Three adsorption geometries of curcumin over the TiO2 anatase nanoparticles were studied in order to fully exploit the sensing properties of TiO2 nanoparticles. Curcumin molecule adsorbs on the fivefold coordinated titanium si...

Thermal properties of molecular crystals through dispersion-corrected quasi-harmonic ab initio calculations: the case of urea.

An ab initio quantum-mechanical theoretical framework is presented to compute the thermal properties of molecular crystals. The present strategy combines dispersion-corrected density-functional-theory (DFT-D), harmonic phonon dispersion, quasi-harmonic approximation to the lattice dynamics for thermal expansion and thermodynamic functions, and quasi-static approximation for anisotropic thermo-e...

Validation of molecular crystal structures from powder diffraction data with dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D)

In 2010 we energy-minimized 225 high-quality single-crystal (SX) structures with dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) to establish a quantitative benchmark. For the current paper, 215 organic crystal structures determined from X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) data and published in an IUCr journal were energy-minimized with DFT-D and compared to the SX benchmark. The on average ...
